Canadian Simmental Foundation awards bursaries, Ag in Motion beefs up its cattle presence

Congratulations to the spring 2019 bursary recipients of the Friends of the Canadian Simmental Foundation. They include Cathryn Thompson, Riley Chalack, Lisa Reich, Alexandra Lee and Tia Schram.

Cathryn Thompson grew up on a cow-calf operation near Calahoo, Alta. She has served as Alberta’s representative on the national Young Canadian Simmental Association (YCSA) board and is currently on YCSA’s Alberta board. She used her funds for an artificial insemination course and intends to out-cross her Simmental females.

Riley Chalack and his parents own and operate Ultra Livestock near Carstairs, Alta., where they breed 220 head of purebred and commercial Simmentals. Chalack used his funds to offset some of the cost of attending the Sydney Royal in Australia, where he fostered new partnerships and learned about the Australian industry.

Lisa Reich and her family run Reich Farm near Tomahawk, Alta., and she is also a vet medical assistant at Drayton Valley. Reich is currently the president of the Alberta YCSA and she is also on the national board. She used her funds for an artificial insemination course, which will help her expand the purebred herd and advance her career.

Alexandra Lee manages the purebred and commercial cattle herds at Cross Bar Anchor Ranch, near Red Deer, Alta. She has also participated in many junior and open shows. Lee used her funds for an artificial insemination course, which will help her start her own purebred herd.

Tia Schram and her family operate North Hill Simmentals near Bruderheim, Alta., where they have 550 head of Simmentals and farm 2,000 acres. Schram sits on the Alberta YCSA and shows cattle in junior and open shows. Schram is using her funds to offset some of the cost of attending a woman’s ag conference in Mexico.


Canadian Angus Association and Boehringer Ingelheim have launched a joint promotion of the Canadian Angus RFID Indicator Program and the Express Verified vaccination program. Interested producers can purchase Express FP products and Canadian Angus RFID indicators. Participating producers should ask their vets for an Express FP purchase certificate when purchasing eligible products. Cattle should be vaccinated according to label directions. Canadian Angus Association staff will then age-verify calves and enter the certificate numbers into the CCIA database at no extra cost. Producers can then inform auction markets, order buyers or feedlots that their calves are tagged Angus and Express Verified.

The Canadian Angus Association is launching AngusConnect. AngusConnect will connect Angus buyers with sellers through the Canadian Angus indicator program. This new program is voluntary and free for producers. The Canadian Angus Association will proactively send a list of participants to feedlots and buyers for their purchasing programs each week.

How it works:

  • Producer must qualify for and use the Canadian Angus RFID indicator.
  • Producer will submit sire(s) information to the Canadian Angus Association.
  • Each producer will receive a group score that he/she can use to market cattle.

Mark your calendar for the fifth annual Ag in Motion Outdoor Farm Expo near Saskatoon, July 16 to 18. This year the BMO Livestock Central area will have over 75 livestock exhibitors. Back by popular demand are cattle handling, TMR, fencing and sheep handling demos. New this year is a stock dog demo along with the Masterfeeds Beef Breeds Showcase. With multiple beef breeds represented in the showcase, it will give ranchers the opportunity to take a closer look at genetic options available and help them make future breeding decisions to improve profitability in their herd.

Each day Ag in Motion will highlight species-specific programs and demonstrations and feature a VIP Brunch. Tuesday, July 16 is designated as Dairy Day, followed by Beef Day on Wednesday and Thursday as Bison Day. The Livestock and Forage Speaker Series, sponsored by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture, is also back and not to be missed.

This year the show expects over 30,000 attendees and 500 exhibitors. The really exciting news is that 100 of the exhibitors are new for this year. Ag in Motion has come a long way when you consider that five years ago, it started with 200 exhibitors and 11,500 attendees.

Other Ag in Motion demos include air seeder, fertilizer-spreading and earth moving and trenching, just to name a few. In 2018, 380 acres was purchased adjacent to the Ag in Motion show site and the Field of Excellence Applied Research Farm became a reality in 2019. As part of the Ag in Motion show, its mandate is to showcase research and technology in real farming conditions through trials and demonstration. What makes Ag in Motion unique in North America is its ability to have large-scale farming demos, demonstrating how all the factors of a farming system interact.

Just when you’ve thought you’d seen it all and it’s time to head home there’s the second annual Field of STARS Concert event Tuesday, July 16. Sponsored by Bayer Crop Science, this year’s headliner is the Hunter Brothers. The event also includes a supper and live auction. Last year’s inaugural Field of STARS event raised over $525,000 dollars through ticket sales and a live and silent auction. The Canadian Canola Council, seeing the value in STARS, donated an additional $100,000 dollars with total proceeds going to support STARS’ life-saving work in Saskatchewan.

The 2019 Charolais Bull Sale summary compiled by the Charolais Banner showed steady numbers and prices. This year saw the second-most bulls sold, with the second-highest gross in the 38 years of records. The Banner reported 93 bull sales, two fewer than last year, with numbers selling down less than one per cent and the overall average down a mere 2.7 per cent. The Banner also reported that 33 bulls sold for $20,000 or more compared to 22 in 2018. Helge By, publisher of the Charolais Banner, attributes the overall strength in the Charolais bull market to more commercial producers crossbreeding to take advantage of Charolais hybrid vigour.
