Quebec Simmental Association hosts national convention

The 2019 Canadian Simmental Association (CSA) National Convention took place August 7 to 11, and was hosted by the Quebec Simmental Association in Saint-Hyacinthe, Que. Participants had the opportunity to tour Old Quebec City as well as local area farms including Ferme Sibelle, Élevages Buffalo Maciocia ltée, and Ferme Claessens.

During this year’s convention, the CSA also conducted its annual general meeting. The CSA showed its appreciation to retiring director Larry Barkley for his commitment and dedication to the association.

The board of directors includes: Garth Rancier (president), Killam, Alta.; Marlin LeBlanc (first vice-president), Estevan, Sask.; Blair McRae (second vice-president), Brandon, Man.; Francis Gagnon, Cheneville, Que.; Roger Deeg, Strathmore, Alta.; Frank Robblee, Crapaud, P.E.I.; Lee McMillen, Carievale, Sask.; Byron Johnson, Amisk, Alta.; and Shane Williams, East Garafraxa, Ont.

A highlight of the convention was the 2019 Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation auction which raised $100,850 to support the foundation’s programming. One highlight was a bred heifer donated by Barlee Simmentals of Shawville, Que., which raised $32,140.

At the 2019 National YCSA show, which was held the final day of the convention, the FCSF presented $15,000 from the auction proceeds to the Young Canadian Simmental Association (YCSA) for ongoing youth activities.

The 2019 Young Canadian Simmental Association’s National Classic completed the week and was attended by almost 70 YCSA members from across Canada and two participants from the U.S. One hundred head of cattle were displayed in the conformation classes. The events began with the YCSA annual general meeting where retiring board members Lisa Reich, Connor Morse, Montana Stillman-Loyst and Allison Booth were recognized for their commitment to the YCSA.

New to the YCSA board are Jessie Swinamer, Windsor, N.S.; Katie Elmhirst, Indian River, Ont.; Jade Noiseux, D’Abbotsford, Que.; and Travis Edwards, Carbon, Alta. The rest of the board includes: Krista Whalen (president), Gould, Que.; Mackenzie Skeels (first vice-president), Rimbey, Alta.; Katie Elmhirst (second vice-president), Indian River, Ont.; Dayne Whelan, Grandora, Sask.; and Gracie Falconer, Hartney, Man.

The Manitoba Simmental Association looks forward to hosting next year’s convention and AGM in Portage la Prairie July 23-26, 2020.
