Canada’s pork groups set up hog health board

Hog producers’, pork processors’ and swine veterinarians’ groups have officially launched their joint body to take the lead on managing health issues in the Canadian swine herd.

The new Canadian Swine Health Board (CSHB) this week launched its website and provided details on its Canadian Swine Health Forum in Saskatoon in July.

“We are looking forward to getting to work,” said CSHB chairman Florian Possberg, founder and deputy chairman of Saskatchewan hog production company Big Sky Farms, in a release.

“The objective of the Forum is to provide an environment for frank and transparent discussion regarding swine health matters with all stakeholders. We are grateful to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada for addressing emerging swine health issues by supporting the CSHB and the Forum.”

The CSHB, whose members said it’s been formed to “proactively address swine health challenges,” says its three proposed program areas include biosecurity and best management practices, circovirus and emerging diseases and research and long-term disease risk management strategies.

Given those program areas, feedback from the Saskatoon event is expected to provide “important guidance for future initiatives,” the board said.

“Rather than holding a series of meetings, we are gathering together in one location producers and other stakeholders involved in swine health to provide input into the activities of the CSHB,” Possberg said of the upcoming forum, set for July 7-8 at Saskatoon’s Radisson Hotel.

“It is therefore crucial that there is maximum participation by all those with a vested interest in swine health.”

The CSHB’s member organizations include the Canadian Pork Council, Canadian Association of Swine Veterinarians, Canadian Association of Veterinary Colleges, Canadian Centre for Swine Improvement and Canadian Meat Council.
