Global Markets: U.S. jobless claims rise

WINNIPEG, Nov. 19 (MarketsFarm) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Weekly jobless claims in the United States were unexpectedly higher in the week ended Nov. 14, rising to 742,000 from 711,000 the previous week, according to the country’s Labor Department. Rising COVID-19 cases were reportedly causing businesses to close and forcing layoffs.

– Australian special forces are alleged to have been involved with the murder of 39 civilians in Afghanistan, according to an investigation conducted by Major General Justice Paul Brereton. The actions of the soldiers were described as “disgraceful and a profound betrayal” of the Australian Defence Force.

– U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Israeli settlements in the West Bank, marking the first visit by a top U.S. official to the controversial occupied territory. Pompeo also visited the Golan Heights. Speaking at a news conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Pompeo indicated that the U.S. would declare campaigns to boycott Israel over its policies towards the Palestinians as ‘anti-Semitic.’
