Harmony Beef back on track

News Roundup from the November 2015 issue of Canadian Cattlemen

Harmony Beef is now looking at April 4, 2016 as its startup date for the former Rancher’s Beef plant in Balzac after the Rocky View Council approved a development permit to construct a water-recycling facility on the site.

The Rocky View Council voted seven to one to issue the permit after 18 months of often intense lobbying by those opposed to reopening the plant that has already cost $25 million in renovations and new European equipment.

The next step is to obtain a building permit and begin construction of the 6,400-square-foot water-recycling facility designed to dramatically reduce the volume of new water needed to operate the plant.

At full capacity it will process about 800 head a day, making it the largest facility in Canada certifiable for export to the European Union.
