Sickle Farms receives Beef Farmers of Ontario Environmental Stewardship Award

Megan Clifton grew up on her family’s cattle ranch near Keremeos, B.C. She was very involved in the local 4-H beef club and her family’s operation while growing up. After graduating from Thompson Rivers University’s two-year registered veterinary technician program, she worked at a mixed animal practice in Penticton as well as her family’s ranch. Currently she is the territory manager for Zoetis Animal Health for northern Alberta and British Columbia. Rick Porter is her mentor.

Melissa Downing was raised on a mixed farm in Manitoba. Downing moved to Alberta for work, going on to attend Olds College and the University of Alberta, where she earned a bachelor of science with a sustainable agriculture major. Downing has since worked in many areas of the industry and is currently the provincial co-ordinator for Verified Beef Production Plus. She also ranches with her husband in east central Alberta. Her mentor is Kim McConnell.

The Alberta Cattle Feeders’ Association held its AGM in March in Red Deer, Alta. Lyle Adams, James Bekkering, Bob de Boer, Kendra Donnelly, and Keith Gregory joined the 2019 board of directors, which is rounded out by directors Jake Buekert, Karleen Clark, John Schooten and Jeff Smith, all in the second year of their terms. Ryan Kasko continues to serve as the ACFA chair, with Greg Schmidt as vice-chair and Martin Zuidhof as past chair.

The Quebec Angus Association held its AGM at Drummondville on April 28. The 2019 board includes Fréderic Gouin as president, Cynthia Jackson as secretary and Ryan Currie as national director. Directors include: Cassandra Belleveau, Akim Labrecque, Luc Noiseux, Jacob Morin, Stan Christensen and Kenneth Beerwort.

Michael Young has stepped into the role of president at Canada Beef. Over his 35-year career, Young has specialized in beef, pork, and veal sales, marketing, product development and product education. He has worked in 25 countries, including the U.S., Japan, China, Taiwan, South Korea and Mexico.

Congratulations to the 2019 regional recipients of The Environmental Stewardship Awards (TESA) announced so far this spring. The national winner will be announced at the Beef Industry Conference in Calgary this August. The awards recognize excellence in environmental stewardship in the beef industry.

Steve and Amanda Sickle of Sickle Farms have received the Beef Farmers of Ontario Environmental Stewardship Award (see photo at top). The Sickles farm, do custom work and raise cattle in the sandy loam hills of Brant County, Ont. Steve Sickle believes in having living roots in soil year round. He’s implemented improvements such as fencing off watercourses and wetlands, installing solar-powered water bowls in field corners, rotational grazing, no-till farming, and seeding cover and intercrops.

Cameron and Lisa Hodgins have also received the award from the Manitoba Beef Producers. The Hodgins family produces beef, pork, lamb, poultry, honey, and eggs on their Lenore-area farm, which they direct-market. The Hodgins have a planned grazing system, and vary stocking densities to balance animal nutrition and pasture growth. Some of their other management practices include using solar-powered remote watering systems, bale grazing, and grazing multispecies cover crops.

Congratulations to Myles Masson who received the Member of the Year Award from the Manitoba Livestock Marketing Association at the annual Man.-Sask. Auctioneer and Cattle Convention in Steinbach, Man. this spring. Masson owns Ste. Rose Auction Mart at St. Rose, Man. Masson has introduced a show-list method of selling cattle at his auction mart. Lots are grouped based on the producer who raised them, rather than weight, grade and breed. St. Rose Auction Mart also promotes sales and consignors through social media.

Craig Scott has been named the new general manager of the Canadian Charolais Association. Scott brings over 20 years of experience in the Charolais industry, including as a fieldman and partner in the Charolais Banner, a livestock photographer and a partner with GRP.

The Canadian Centre for Food Integrity has hired John Jamieson as its new president and CEO. Jamieson brings more than 25 years of senior leadership within Canada’s agri-food sector to the role. Most recently he served as deputy minister of Agriculture and Fisheries and deputy minister of Rural and Regional Development in Prince Edward Island. Outgoing president Crystal Mackay recently launched her own communications company, Loft32, with a focus on speaking, training and projects.

Dr. Jennifer Pearson, a PhD student at the University of Calgary, was awarded the Douglas A. Armstrong Memorial Scholar­ship from the international Academy of Veterinary Consultants. Pearson received the scholarship for her research on difficult calvings.
