Day one of the 59th National Farm Machinery Show kicked off today in Louisville, Kentucky, and farm equipment manufacturers had a number of new items to capture the attention of visitors.

Hesston by Massey Ferguson launched its new double small square baler on the show floor at a media event immediately after the show doors opened. The SB.1436DB produces two rows of bales per field pass and is clearly aimed at maximizing productivity.

The new baler features an advanced electronic monitoring and control system called, SimplEbale. It automates critical baling processes to ensure consistent bale density, weight and dimensions. From inside the cab, operators can monitor flake thickness, flake count, bale length and bale weight in real time, ensuring maximum throughput.

“With its heavy-duty design and groundbreaking technology, this baler helps operators achieve better efficiency and superior results, reducing costs while increasing profitability,” said Dane Mosel, marketing manager for Hesston by Massey Ferguson, in a press release.

Also unveiled at the show was a new Farmall C series tractor from Case IH.

The new Farmall C lineup offers a 12-speed PowerShuttle and 24-speed Hi-Lo transmission, reinforced front axle, boosted hydraulic flow, heavier gross vehicle weight and increased rear lift capacity.

“The new Farmall C not only offers heavy-duty performance and maneuverability, it delivers an improved operator experience,” said Leo Bose customer segmentation lead at Case IH, in a press release. “With the new brake to clutch feature, greater visibility, and the new L635 loader, operators can enjoy significantly increased comfort and reduced fatigue.”

There was a lot to see and do at the show so check out the video below of some of the day’s events on the show floor.

With over 800 exhibitors occupying more than a million square feet of space at the Kentucky Exposition Center, it’s pretty much A-Z when it comes to the display of agricultural wares at this year’s National Farm Machinery Show.

Two well-known machinery brands took this opportunity to pull back the curtain and showcase their latest offerings in the combine market.

After turning heads at the Agritechnica show in Germany last November, New Holland’s CR11 combine began its North American tour on opening day of the annual show in Louisville, Kentucky.

New Holland’s C11 combine sports a brand new Cursor 16 engine and sees a horsepower output of 775, an increase of 75 horsepower compared with its C10 brother.

“This combine is built on the strong legacy of New Holland twin-rotor combines,” said Curtis Hillen, combine marketing manager for New Holland. “But this sets a new benchmark in the industry in terms of combine performance.”

New Holland’s CR11 combine at the National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville, Kentucky. Photo: Greg Berg

Not to be outdone – and also weighing in at 775 horsepower – was Case IH’s new AF11 combine parked on the other side of the Exposition Center hall.

Leo Bose, harvest marketing manager with Case IH, says there are three areas the company has focused in on with its latest and largest combine.

“There’s really three areas that we focus in on,” said Bose. “Not only capacity, but the technology and the run time that really our customers are requesting for the size of machine we see behind us today.”

Want to learn more? Watch for upcoming videos of both of these combines on AgDealerTV coming soon to a screen near you.

Now in its 58th year, the National Farm Machinery Show is the largest indoor trade show in the United States.

Milan | Reuters — Farm and construction equipment maker CNH Industrial said Tuesday its plan to abandon the Milan stock market and retain a single listing for its shares on the New York Stock Exchange would be effective from Jan. 2 next year.

The Italian-American group, whose shares are currently traded both on the NYSE and in Milan, earlier this year announced a plan to abandon its Italian listing.

CNH said in a statement on Tuesday that the Milan Stock Exchange had approved an application it filed to delist its ordinary shares from Milan bourse and had set the Jan. 2 date for when a NYSE single listing will be effective.

Its shares will be tradable in Milan until Dec. 29.

CNH also on Tuesday lowered its 2023 revenue forecast, citing a softening for its farm machinery, predominantly in South America, sending its shares plummeting.

As part of its New York single-listing plan, CNH announced a new share buyback program worth up to US$1 billion.

“The program is intended to optimize the capital structure of the company and to assist with offsetting any potential volatility arising from the delisting of its shares on Euronext Milan,” CNH said in a statement.

Since it spun off its truck and bus unit in January 2022, now separately listed as Iveco Group, the majority of CNH stock trading has progressively shifted to NYSE, the company said.

“Concentrating trading in one market should allow for increased liquidity and investor focus, while further simplifying the company profile and compliance requirements,” it said.

The new buyback program will run between Nov. 8 and March 1 and will be funded through the company’s liquidity.

It will consist of two components: the repurchase of shares worth up to 400 million euros (C$588 million) on Euronext Milan and on multilateral trading facilities between Nov. 8 and Dec. 29 and the repurchase of shares for the remaining amount to be executed on NYSE between Nov. 8 and Match 1.

Goldman Sachs is acting as financial advisor to CNH, while BNP Paribas is acting as co-advisor and buyback agent for the group in Europe.

Heavy equipment firm CNH plans to get two new all-electric utility tractor models onto at least a few dealer lots in 2024 — including one it bills as a first in the tractor market.

CNH’s New Holland Agriculture arm said Monday its T4 Electric Power model, “the first all-electric utility tractor with autonomous features,” will be launched this week at the Farm Progress Show, and commercially available in North America with “select dealers” early in 2024.

The Decatur, Illinois farm show will also host the unveiling of the Farmall 75C Electric, a utility model that CNH’s Case IH arm billed in a separate release Monday as its “smartest” electric tractor.

New Holland said the T4 “opens a new class in the market, the Utility Electric,” and will be an “ideal solution for lower-horsepower field operations” such as mixed farms, hay and forage, dairy and other livestock and greenhouse, vegetable and orchard crops.

The T4 Electric Power battery system and fully electric drivetrain provide a 110-kilowatt-hour maximum energy storage capacity in a 400-volt circuit, for 74 horsepower (55 kilowatts) rated power and 65 hp (48 kW) PTO power, CNH said.

Given the usual light-, medium- and heavy-duty applications of a utility tractor, New Holland estimates the T4 can provide four hours’ average runtime, or up to eight working hours in strictly “low-energy demand” applications.

The T4 unit also includes four-wheel drive, a 12×12 transmission, clutch-less electronic power shuttle reverser and “all the regular power outputs of a traditional diesel utility,” CNH said, such as rear electro-hydraulic PTO, drawbar, multiple rear remotes, mid-mount valves and a New Holland 725LU mechanical self-leveling front loader with third function and 84-inch bucket.

The electrified drivetrain allows for high torque and fast response, which with the electronic power shuttle transmission, means “even an inexperienced operator can run the implements during the applications without the need for precise gear selection and throttle control,” CNH said. Experienced operators will have “infinite” speed adjustments by controlling motor rpm.

The T4 can be recharged in either alternate current (AC) or direct current (DC), and would take one hour to charge to 100 per cent power using a “commercially available” DC fast-charging system, CNH said.

The T4’s “Smart Roof” houses the cameras and sensors supporting its “driver-assisted” features such as Follow Me Mode, the Invisible Bucket and 360 Degree Awareness, along with “fully digital and connected” functions such as Over the Air Updates, Live View and Map Maker — all of which New Holland said will make this tractor “the first of its kind in the world.”

Case IH’s Farmall 75C Electric. (Image courtesy CNH)

Case IH, meanwhile, said it will mark the Farmall brand’s “100th year” with a sneak peek at the Farmall 75C Electric at the Farm Progress Show.

The 75C’s exact specs weren’t available in Monday’s release, in which Case IH said the unit will be available for “limited orders” in the first quarter of 2024 and released “in specific markets” during the year.

Like the T4, the Farmall 75C offers “diesel-like performance with an average four-hour run time and fast recharging, plus lower operating costs,” Case IH said, allowing “maximum ” versatility” for jobs such as maintaining vineyards or managing a small herd. — Glacier FarmMedia Network

“Operations that swath grains have been asking for a draper head solution to work with our Speedrower Plus series self-propelled windrowers and we listened,” Josh Harkenrider, commercial hay and forage product marketing manager for New Holland Agriculture in North America, said in Tuesday’s release.

“We’re confident this partnership will provide a robust solution for customers as it combines the experience from Honey Bee with the productivity, precision and performance of our windrowers.”

New Holland and Honey Bee said the combination will be available in two draper head models, the 30-foot WSC30 and the 36-foot WSC36. Both will include the SCH Easy Cut cutting system with spring steel guards including cutting edges on the top and bottom, plus alternating, bolted, heat-treated sections, which the companies said will “eliminate” the need for hold-downs.

“When you combine the wide cutting widths and the array of proven components, along with the hydraulic capacity, advanced SensiDrive drive-by-wire controls and easy-to-use precision solutions on our Speedrower Plus Series, customers can expect a faster and more efficient harvest for seasons to come,” Harkenrider said.

The WSC30 and WSC36 are also the models compatible with Case IH’s WD5 units. Case IH said the Honey Bee draper heads with adjustable castering gauge wheels will “eliminate gouging and crop scuffing.”

The Case IH/Honey Bee collaboration “unlocks the draper potential of the WD5 series windrowers for small grain and canola producers,” Brian Spencer, Case IH marketing manager for hay and forage products, said in a separate release last month.

“Every minute a machine sits idle cuts into producers’ bottom lines,” he said. “The Honey Bee draper heads include heavy-duty rollers for a longer service life. They can also quickly replace reel fingers with only pliers and a wrench to get the equipment back in the field faster.”

Case IH said the draper heads’ integrated transport function will also allow operators to save time moving from field to field with “quick and convenient field-to-road conversion.”

Jamie Pegg, general manager for Honey Bee, said in Tuesday’s release that the partnership agreement “puts our proven platform into the hands of more farmers through CNH Industrial’s robust dealer network.”

Honey Bee was founded in 1979 by brothers Greg and Glenn Honey and their wives at Bracken, Sask., about 155 km south of Swift Current. The company expanded into harvest headers in the 1980s and set up shop at nearby Frontier in 1987.

The company today operates on over 100,000 square feet of production and warehousing space, selling into both the domestic and export markets. Its other product lines include the AirFlex, Grain Belt and Rice Belt header systems and the Rod Master rod weeder. — Glacier FarmMedia Network

Milan | Reuters — Farm and construction equipment maker CNH Industrial on Friday raised its full-year revenue forecast as operating profit topped expectations in the first quarter, aided by a strong order backlog and resilient demand for its large tractors.

The company increased its revenue outlook for industrial activities to between eight and 11 per cent this year, versus a previous forecast of between six and 10 per cent.

Farmers’ solid income cushioned profits even as commodity prices came down from their peaks a year ago. Growers were able to cash in on still-elevated wheat and soybean prices, which fueled purchases for new and used machinery, CNH CEO Scott Wine said.

CNH’s farm equipment brands include Case IH, New Holland, Steyr and Flexi-Coil.

“The high-horsepower and cash crop markets continue to be very strong,” Wine said in an interview, adding that the company is planning to accelerate production of large ag equipment to catch up on volume output that was reduced during an eight-month long United Auto Workers strike.

Like competitors Deere and Caterpillar, CNH’s profit margins were propped up by price increases across its machinery businesses to offset inflated input costs and a choppy supply chain.

Analysts believe the manufacturer’s double-digit price hikes that contributed to a 16 per cent increase in net sales on the year for its agriculture division will sustain the company’s margin growth in the coming quarters, said Eric Greaser, vice-president at Moody’s.

Industrial activity revenues increased 21 per cent in 2022.

CNH’s first-quarter adjusted earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) for industrial activities rose 29 per cent to US$555 million, just ahead of analysts’ consensus forecast in a Reuters poll. Revenue was in line with expectations at US$4.78 billion.

Company executives said they were confident the company would complete its delisting from the Milan bourse by the end of the year and keep its shares trading only in New York.

CNH Industrial, parent of the Case IH. New Holland, Steyr and Flexi-Coil farm equipment brands, has signed a cash deal to buy satellite positioning tech firm Hemisphere GNSS, parent of the Outback Guidance aftermarket GPS, precision ag and autosteer business.

CNH announced Thursday it will pay $175 million for Hemisphere, which has been owned since 2013 by Chinese geospatial tech firm Beijing Unistrong (all figures US$).

CNH described the deal for Hemisphere as “a critical step that advances our automated and autonomous solutions for agriculture and construction.”

The machinery maker has undertaken a major push into autonomous ag — most significantly in 2021 with the $2.1 billion purchase of U.S. precision ag tech firm Raven Industries, whose products include the Canadian-developed OMNiPower (formerly DOT) autonomous equipment system.

CNH also bought control of U.S.-Greek precision ag and field analysis tech firm Augmenta earlier this month, and a minority stake in U.S. ag sensor firm EarthOptics in January.

Hemisphere, which was spun off from U.S.-based AgJunction — now an arm of Kubota Corp. — acquired the Kansas-based Outback Guidance business from AgJunction in 2018.

Combined with its Raven business’ capabilities, CNH said Thursday, “this development gives us full control of our precision and navigation technologies.”

“Having Hemisphere’s technology in-house will enable us to accelerate a broad range of our precision technology programs, providing our customers with immediate productivity-enhancing solutions,” Marc Kermisch, CNH’s chief digital and information officer, said in Thursday’s release. “It will also increase the long-term competitiveness and flexibility of our agriculture and construction portfolio.”

Hemisphere will, however, continue to operate as a standalone business through its operations in Canada, the U.S. and Australia, CNH said.

Headquartered in Scottsdale, Ariz., Hemisphere’s Canadian operations include a site in Calgary and its Outback Guidance site at Oak Bluff, Man., just southwest of Winnipeg.

Hemisphere’s global navigation satellite system (GNSS) and related electronics and software provide “pinpoint accuracy” for agriculture, construction, mining and marine tools, CNH said. The company’s tech includes circuit chips, circuit boards, radio frequency signal processing, navigation algorithms and satellite-based correction designs.

Hemisphere CEO Farlin Halsey said the combination with CNH “enables us to further enhance our technology and product development” in those core markets and to “directly integrate our technology with CNH Industrial’s world-class equipment.”

The deal, pending regulatory and shareholder approvals, is expected to close sometime in the third quarter of 2023. — Glacier FarmMedia Network

Reuters — CNH Industrial said on Thursday its 2023 net sales of industrial activities would grow by between six and 10 per cent, after the group posted stronger-than-expected results in the last quarter of 2022.

The industry faced several headwinds in 2022, including a choppy supply chain and inflation, but late in the year these problems began to modestly improve and the trend should continue into 2023, CEO Scott Wine told analysts.

The Italo-American farming and construction machine maker forecast its 2023 free cash flow (FCF) of industrial activities at between $1.3 billion and $1.5 billion, compared with $1.6 billion last year (all figures US$).

In spite of a lesser impact of inflation on some areas, Wine said price rises would still have to be part of the company’s strategy going into 2023.

Looking further ahead, he said, “we’re not saying that 2024 is going to be a horrible year” but added that “it’s unlikely that this very strong ag (agriculture) markets we’ve experienced for years is going to go on forever.”

The combine harvesters producer has re-positioned itself in recent years to fit its declared aim of feeding a growing world population.

The group has accelerated its investments in agriculture with a focus on automation and precision technology such as driverless tillage or seed-by-seed planting to deliver higher yields, cut costs, and lower its ecological impact.

Agriculture accounted for over 80 per cent of CNH’s industrial revenues in the fourth quarter. Overall sales from industrial activities rose 31 per cent at constant currency to $6.35 billion, pushed by favourable price trends and higher volumes.

Its adjusted operating profit of industrial activities rose to $680 billion, beating analysts’ expectations of $566 million based on a market consensus provided by Intesa Sanpaolo.

Earlier on Thursday the group said it was planning to delist from Milan and keep its shares trading only in New York.

Wine said the company was targeting the sole listing by the end of this year but it could be delayed until 2024.

‘Improvements’

CNH, which will propose an annual cash dividend of about 38 cents per share, also said it welcomed the end of a strike by two local unions at its factories in Wisconsin and Iowa.

The company said Jan. 23 its unionized workers at Racine and Burlington have voted to ratify a “last, best and final” offer it presented following mediation.

About 1,100 workers at the two plants, represented by the United Auto Workers (UAW), had been on strike since early May 2022.

The Racine plant makes Case IH Magnum tractors, transmissions for the company’s Axial-Flow combines and axles and valves for other ag applications. The Burlington plant makes harvest headers for Case IH and New Holland combines; it also makes backhoes, forklifts and crawler dozers.

The UAW, in a separate release Jan. 23, said the deal provides for “wage increases, shift premium increases (and) classification upgrades as well as other improvements.”

“Our negotiators tenaciously bargained to the very end, even fighting for contract improvements in the face of threats from (CNH) to hire permanent strike replacements,” UAW vice-president Chuck Browning said in the release.

Racine | Reuters — Members of two local unions that have been on strike since May at CNH Industrial factories in Wisconsin and Iowa on Saturday voted down a tentative labour contract, the United Auto Workers union said.

The union did not disclose how many workers at the two plants rejected the four-year deal, which included wage increases of 25-38 per cent according to CNH on Sunday. Still, union members said the proposed contract failed to provide enough of a raise to combat inflation, additional vacation days or better healthcare coverage.

The UAW represents about 1,000 workers at the plants, and union officials had warned a rejection of the latest offer was likely.

“We’re going to notify the company and see if they are willing to come back to the table,” said Yasin Mahdi, the UAW local president in Racine, Wisconsin, where the company employs about 700 people. “I hope the next time they come with a real, bona fide offer.”

CNH officials said the latest offer was its “last, best and final” and in a statement encouraged employees to “reconsider their position in another vote.” The company said it will wait for the union to take the next step.

Workers in May had rejected an offer by the maker of agriculture and construction equipment that included an 18.5 per cent wage increase over three years.

The Italian-American company brought in replacement workers to keep the factories operating once the strike began, union officials said. The plant in Racine, 100 km north of Chicago, makes tractors and combines, while the Burlington, Iowa, facility builds tractor loaders, backhoes and forklifts.

The strike has stretched well beyond the two-month average in the United States, said Robert Bruno, a labour professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. With a tightening labour market, union workers in the industrial sector for companies such as Boeing and Deere have gone on strike in recent years.

In 2021, more than 10,000 Deere workers in three Midwest states rejected two contract offers before a deal was reached to end a five-week strike.

For CNH workers, who last struck the company in 2004, some have taken second jobs to augment strike pay they receive from the UAW. They note the company has been reporting strong profits, including US$670 million on an adjusted basis in the most recent quarter.

At an elementary school in Wisconsin where the ballots were cast, workers voiced frustration and determination.

“This is a multibillion dollar company, they can afford to give us everything we’re asking for. We’re not asking for too much,” said 61-year-old Alric Davis.

Kelly Peters, a sub-assembly worker at the Racine plant, was not ready to vote yes.

“They’re just giving increments, like dangling a bone to see if we’re going to bite. I’m not biting,” she said.

A Wisconsin company that has supplied aluminum spray booms for Case IH sprayer product lines has been brought in-house.

CNH Industrial, owner of the Case IH and New Holland brands, announced May 23 it has bought Specialty Enterprises, which is billed as North America’s biggest maker of aluminum spray booms for farm applications as well as boom accessories such as cradles, swing arms, transoms and bracketry.

Specialty, which has one plant at Wautoma, about 130 km southwest of Green Bay, has been a supplier to Case IH since 2020, CNH said. Financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.

“The direct ownership of spray boom production is the latest step in Case IH’s strategic road map for its sprayer product platform,” CNH said, and the use of “longer, lighter” booms has allowed for “accelerated development and deployment” of new technologies.

Aluminum spray booms are up to 50 per cent lighter than their steel counterparts, CNH said, making for better weight distribution and less field compaction and rutting.

Specialty, which started in 1987 as a welding and fabrication job shop, tacked to specialize in sprayer boom manufacturing by 2010, designing the Legacy line and, in 2015, the “ultra-durable” Millennium line of booms used by manufacturers including Deere, Agco, Hagie and Buhler Versatile, among others.

Specialty’s sprayer boom design incorporates multiple patents to “virtually eliminate” the fatigue cracking associated with other aluminum boom designs, CNH said, noting the aluminum used in Specialty products is both sourced and extruded in the U.S. — Glacier FarmMedia Network
