MarketsFarm — Prices for feed barley and wheat in Alberta pulled back a little this week — and it wasn’t because the province has generally received more rain than the other two Prairie provinces.
“There hasn’t been the demand as we typically have at this time of year,” Erin Harakal, senior trader with Agfinity in Stony Plain, Alta., said, noting attention has turned away from old-crop to new-crop.
Going into Lethbridge’s feedlot alley, feed prices for barley were around $7-$7.20 per bushel delivered for July-August and $6.15-$6.25/bu. for September-December. Wheat was $8.75-$8.95/bu.

Prairie Ag Hotwire reported feed prices were down in Alberta, with barley falling back 26 cents at $5.77-$7.36/bu. delivered. Wheat dropped 22 cents at $7.27-$9.25/bu.
Saskatchewan saw its feed barley hold steady at $5.90-$6/bu. delivered, with wheat up eight cents at $7.40-$7.58/bu.
In Manitoba, barley gained 12 cents, rising to $6-$6.12/bu. delivered, while wheat was up six cents with prices at $7.75-$8.23/bu.
Harakal said the rain wasn’t much a factor, considering precipitation depended on the area in Alberta. She stressed that the entire Prairies are in great need of moisture following the very hot temperatures the region experienced during the week of June 28.
