– Candice Bergen, Member of Parliament of southern Manitoba’s Portage-Lisgar riding, has been voted interim leader of the federal Conservative Party. She follows Erin O’Toole, who was ousted from his role on Wednesday. Bergen has been an MP since 2008, most recently acting as the Conservative’s deputy leader in the House.
– Islamic State leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi was reported killed overnight during a raid conducted by United States special forces in Syria, said U.S. President Joe Biden.
– The Bank of England raised interest rates to 0.5 per cent on Thursday in an effort to constrain rising inflation. Four of the nine Monetary Policy Committee members had voted for an even larger 0.75 per cent increase.
