Canadian Dollar and Business Outlook: Loonie steady, crude oil rises

WINNIPEG – The Canadian dollar stayed mostly steady on Wednesday as it approaches the 80 United States cent mark.

As of 8:42 a.m. CDT, the loonie was at US$0.7943 or US$1=C$1.2590, compared to US$0.7944 or US$1=C$1.2588 on Tuesday. The U.S. Dollar Index was up 0.32 of a point at 98.82.

Benchmark crude oil prices were on the rise on Wednesday due to the potential for new sanctions against Russia and repairs to a Black Sea export terminal. Brent crude oil advanced US$4.90 per barrel to US$120.38. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) also increased US$4.90 to US$114.17/barrel. Western Canadian Select (WCS) added US$4.18 to US$101.80/barrel.

The TSX/S&P Composite Index shed 27.05 points to 22,047.30.

Gold rose US$10.10 per ounce to US$1,931.60.
