Global Markets: Russia wants to capture southern, eastern Ukraine: general

WINNIPEG – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Rustam Minnekayev, the deputy commander of Russia’s central military district, told state news agencies on Friday the country aims to seize the entire Donbas region and capture all of southern Ukraine. In response, the defence ministry of Ukraine said on Twitter that “(Russia) stopped hiding it” and that the goal of the second phase of the war “is not victory over the mythical Nazis, but simply the occupation of eastern and southern Ukraine.” Mazar Technologies, a satellite images provider, released photos on Friday showing 200 mass graves outside Mariupol and could hold as many as 9,000 dead, according to Mariupol City Council. On Thursday, Russia imposed entry bans on 61 Canadians including Canada’s United Nations Ambassador Bob Rae, Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem and five premiers.
