– Russian President Vladimir Putin blamed Western policies on his country’s invasion of Ukraine in remarks made during Victory Day celebrations in Moscow on Monday. The holiday marks the 77th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II and Putin repeated claims that the invasion repelled attempted aggression by Ukraine. There is fear by international observers that the day will mark a renewed offensive by Russia in Ukraine. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a surprise visit to the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv on Sunday, meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky, assisting in the re-opening of the Canadian Embassy in the city and accusing Putin of “heinous war crimes”.

– The Competition Bureau is opposing Rogers Communications Inc.’s planned C$20 billion takeover of Shaw Communications Inc., both companies announced on Saturday. Many analysts believe that the deal is not dead and can receive approval if smaller telecommunication companies like Quebecor and Cogeco purchase some of Shaw’s assets, including discount cell phone service provider Freedom Mobile. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission has given its blessing towards the deal, but also requires approval from the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Economic Development.
