Global Markets: China warns Canada about surveillance mission

WINNIPEG – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– China’s foreign ministry warned Canada of “severe consequences” of “risky provocation” on Monday after Canada’s military accused Chinese warplanes last week of harassing its patrol aircraft while monitoring North Korea for sanctions violations. China’s defence ministry also accused Canada’s military jets of endangering China’s national security and becoming more provocative under the pretext of implementing United Nations Security Council resolutions. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that Canada was an active member to ensure North Korean sanctions were properly enforced.

– Conservative Members of Parliament in the United Kingdom will hold a non-confidence vote on Monday which could remove Boris Johnson as party leader and prime minister. At least 54 Tory MPs, 15 per cent of the number of Conservative lawmakers in the House of Commons, sent written notice to the party demanding a vote. Johnson has been under fire from both sides of the House over the past few months over rule-breaking parties in government buildings during COVID-19 lockdowns.

– Queen Elizabeth appeared on the balcony of Buckingham Palace on Sunday to close out the four-day Platinum Jubilee celebration, recognizing her 70 years on the British throne. The 96-year-old monarch also made two other public appearances on Thursday. The Queen has made fewer appearances as of late due to health issues.
