– Ukrainian forces are set to retreat from the besieged eastern city of Severodonetsk to avoid being encircled by Russian troops, according to reports. An estimated 500 soldiers and civilians remain holed up in an abandoned chemical plant. With the Russian advances, the country is close to taking full control of Ukraine’s Luhansk province.

– Byelections in the United Kingdom saw Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Conservatives lose two seats, prompting the resignation of the party’s chairman. The losses suggest Johnson’s electoral coalition ay be in jeopardy, with the Labour Party and Liberal Democrats each picking up a seat.

– An aftershock in eastern Afghanistan after the deadly earthquake earlier this week has caused further damage and has stymied humanitarian efforts. Over 1,100 people reportedly died from the 6.1 magnitude quake on Wednesday.
