Global Markets: Sweden, Finland closer to NATO membership

WINNIPEG – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– NATO members signed off on accession protocols for both Sweden and Finland on Tuesday, putting them one step closer towards becoming a part of the alliance. At a NATO summit last week, the organization decided to invite both nations, who had sought membership due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. However, Sweden and Finland’s potential memberships may be blocked by Turkey, who want to extradite terror suspects.

– The Canadian National Railway (CN Rail) and the union representing 750 of its signal and communication workers have agreed to enter binding arbitration on Monday, ending a two-week strike. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) had informed CN Rail of potential strike action in mid-June over benefit and wage increases.

– A gunman on a rooftop killed six people and injured 30 more at an Independence Day parade in Highland Park, Ill. north of Chicago on Monday. After an hours-long manhunt, authorities have identified 21-year-old Robert E. Crimo III as a person of interest. Highland Park police found a rifle near the scene. The morning shooting caused Fourth of July celebrations at other Chicago suburbs to be cancelled.

– At least six people were killed from roof collapses from torrential rains in Pakistan which started on Monday. Several people have also went missing in the southwestern province of Baluchistan where flash flooding swallowed the area. Since June, rains have killed 38 people and damaged more than 200 homes across the country.
