– Russian President Vladimir Putin signed laws on Wednesday in an attempt to annex four Ukrainian territories. Last week, Russia held referendums in its occupied territories to absorb the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, which were roundly condemned by the international community. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov implied that Russia could annex more Ukrainian territory saying it will “keep consulting residents who would be eager to embrace Russia.” Meanwhile, the Ukrainian military said that its country’s flag is flying over seven villages in Kherson.

– A South Korean ballistic missile malfunctioned after launch on Wednesday during a live-fire drill with the United States. This came a day after North Korea’s successful launch of a missile that flew over Japan and had the range to strike the U.S. territory of Guam. The explosion and fire occurred near the coastal city of Gangneung, where some residents thought it came from a North Korean missile after South Korea’s military did not provide an explanation for hours.
– Tesla CEO Elon Musk decided once again on Tuesday to make a US$44 million offer for social media platform Twitter. He first made the offer in April but later backed out last summer over concerns about the number of bots on Twitter. A trial was set to start in Delaware on Oct. 17. Shares for Twitter jumped 13 per cent to US$48 per share before being halted.
