Global Markets: U.S. House, Senate still up for grabs

WINNIPEG – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Control over the United States House of Representatives and the Senate is still yet to be determined after Americans took to the polls on Tuesday for midterm elections. The Republicans’ so-called “red wave” many political pollsters anticipated never materialized as the party underperformed in many races. The Democratic Party picked up one Senate seat, with Pennsylvania’s John Fetterman defeating TV personality and Republican candidate Mehmet Oz, but each party stands with 48 elected Senate seats with both parties leading two races each as of Wednesday morning. Meanwhile, the Republicans lead in House seats 199-178 with 218 seats needed for a majority.

– Rogers Communications Inc. reported its third quarter earnings on Wednesday, making a profit of C$371 million, down from C$490 million at the same time last year. Its revenue for the quarter totalled C$3.74 billion, up two per cent from the third quarter of 2021. However, the report noted that excluding credits given to customers after a major network outage in July, revenue would have increased six per cent.

– American basketball star Brittney Griner, who was detained in February and convicted in August for drug smuggling, is being transferred to a Russian penal colony, according to her attorneys. Griner was sentenced to nine years in prison after Russian officials found a small amount of cannabis on her. Her appeal was denied last week, with one U.S. State Department spokesperson calling it “another repudiation of justice.”
