Global Markets: Biden and Xi meet in Indonesia

WINNIPEG, Nov. 14 – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– United States President Joe Biden met with China’s Xi Jinping on Monday for their first in-person talks since Biden became president. The meeting lasted a little over three hours covering a wide range of topics as the two countries work to thaw their relations. The leaders were both in Indonesia for a Group of 20 meeting.

– Wearing masks in all indoor public settings, including schools, is being ‘strongly recommended’ by Ontario’s chief medical officer of health. The recommendation comes as the province’s health system is pressured by increased cold and flu cases along with the ongoing circulation of COVID-19.

– Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the newly liberated city of Kherson on Monday, touting Russia’s withdrawal from the city as the “beginning of the end of the war,” according to reports. However, large parts of eastern and southern Ukraine remain under Russian control as nearly nine-month long war drags on.
