Global Markets: Canadian retail sales dip in September

WINNIPEG, Nov. 22 – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

 

  • Canadian retail sales were down by 0.5 per cent in September, coming in at C$61.1 billion, according to a report from Statistics Canada. Sales were down in seven of 11 subsectors with the largest losses seen at gasoline stations. Early wholesale trade data for October indicated that wholesale sales were up by 1.3 per cent on the month, with the final report out in December.

  • An earthquake in Indonesia on Monday killed at least 268 people, with many still missing and search efforts underway. The shallowness of the 5.6 magnitude quake along with inadequate infrastructure contributed to the damage, with the quake much less severe than many seen in the country.

 

  • Malaysia’s king will pick the next prime minister of the country after the two leading contenders failed to win a majority in this past weekend’s election. King Al-Sultan Abdullah had suggested the two rivals work together in a coalition, but the two leaders declined. The king usually only plays a ceremonial role in the country’s government.
