Global Markets: Ukrainian conflict continues

WINNIPEG, Jan. 3 – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

 

  • Russian drone strikes on Ukraine continued to start the New Year, although Ukraine claimed that all the latest wave of attacks were shot down. Meanwhile, reports that dozens of Russian troops staying in a temporary barracks in Donetsk were shot down by Ukrainian strikes were reportedly leading to internal Russian criticism of the situation.

 

  • The United States Congress is set to vote in their new Speaker of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, with a split in the Republican Party raising questions over whether Rep. Kevin McCarthy will get the nod. The new Speaker of the House will replace Democrat Nancy Pelosi.

 

  • The funeral for Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI will be held at the Vatican on Thursday. The former pope, 95, retired from his role in 2013 – marking the first to do so in 600 years. His body will lay in state in St. Peter’s Basilica, with thousands expected to pay their respects.
