WINNIPEG, Jan. 6 – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

  • Canada’s economy added 104,000 jobs in December while the unemployment rate dipped to 5.0 per cent, according to a report from Statistics Canada. Meanwhile, the United States Labor Department reported 223,000 new jobs during the month in that country, with the U.S. unemployment rate matching a 53-year low at 3.5 per cent.

  • The standoff over who will become the next Speaker of the United States House of Representatives continued into its fourth day on Friday, as division within the majority-Republican party has already seen top-contender Kevin McCarthy fail in 11 vote attempts.

  • Air raid sirens were still being heard in Ukraine on Friday, although a Russian Christmas ceasefire was apparently holding for the most part. Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a 36-hour ceasefire in observance of Orthodox Christmas on Jan. 7, but Ukrainian officials were skeptical of Russia’s motives and vowed to keep fighting.
