Bobby Hull’s interest in Hereford cattle began as a child during family drives through the countryside.

Bobby Hull passed away recently at the age of 84. Best known as an NHL star, Hull was also an avid Hereford breeder who did look over the fence at the Simmental breed. As part of the All-Star Simmental Breeders syndicate, they bought the bull Bar 5 Catalyst 238E for $68,000 and renamed him Achilles Golden Jet. Thank you to Lynn Gordon and Bruce Holmquist for sharing that tidbit.

Hull was also added to the Canadian Hereford Association Honour Roll in 2012. His interest in Hereford cattle began as a child during family drives through the countryside. He acquired his first Herefords in 1959 with Ralph Richards of Demorestville, Ont. In 1968, Hull moved the herd from Ontario to Whitewood, Sask., where he partnered with Walter Horn, running the cattle operation under the name Hull and Horn Herefords. After signing on with the Winnipeg Jets in 1972, he moved the herd again to Elmcreek, Man., partnering with Bob Miller, under the name BNB Polled Herefords. BNB dispersed in the late ’70s, and Hull moved his cattle to various Ontario Hereford breeders. Eventually, he forged a management agreement with Lorne Hadden of Blue Dove Cattle Co. and moved his herd to Bear Island, N.B., in 2003, where Michael Goodine took charge of the herd.

Some notable animals that were bred, owned or shown by Hull include PRL Justa Five, a national champion female bred by BNB Polled Herefords and Bob Gordon; Elmbar Calibre, a national Jr. champion bull owned partially by BNB Polled Herefords; and STLBRK Gilead 67K (a.k.a. “Stick”), the fifth most influential sire of the Canadian Hereford herd, in which Hull purchased a half-interest.
