  • On what could be the cusp of a recession, Canadian Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland will introduce the federal Liberal government’s next budget on Tuesday at 3 pm CDT. The media speculated that Freeland will hone a balance between providing inflation relief for Canadians while trying to keep spending under tight control. Bloomberg Canada said a report from Deloitte Canada indicated that the country’s real gross domestic product will contract by 0.5 per cent in 2023 and then rebound next year with two per cent growth.

  • The United States Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) alleged on Monday that Binance, the world’s largest crypto trading platform, has violated numerous financial laws as well as failing to register properly with authorities. Among the Binance executives named in the lawsuit was founder and CEO Changpeng Zhao. Binance has denied all allegations. A report estimated Binance processed C$23 trillion in trades in 2022 and C$34 trillion the year before.

 

  • Amid growing protests, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Monday a delay to his government’s controversial judicial overhaul. In a statement, Netanyahu claimed the move was to avoid civil war and called for a timeout to have a dialogue over his proposed changes to the Israeli courts. While Netanyahu still faces corruption charges, his government’s changes have been viewed as a brash attempt to weaken the courts.

 

  • Police in Nashville, Tenn. continued their investigation on Tuesday into Monday’s school shooting that ended with the deaths of three children and three adults. The suspect, one time student Audrey Hale, is alleged to have planned the attack at Covenant School, a private Christian school. Hale was fatally shot by police.
