Global Markets: Biden to run for second term

WINNIPEG – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– United States President Joe Biden formally announced on Tuesday that he will run for re-election, asking voters to help him “finish the job”. Biden, who turns 81 in November, is already the oldest president in U.S. history and would be 86 by the end of his second term if re-elected. In a video that also featured Vice President Kamala Harris, Biden exhorted voters to “defend democracy” and to “stand up for personal freedoms…and our civil rights”. He has two long-shot challengers in the Democratic primaries, author Marianne Williamson and COVID-19 vaccine skeptic Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

– Canadian National Railway (CN Rail) announced a new North American container shipping service on Monday as it tries to match the continental reach by its main competitor Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC). The service is named Falcon Premium which connects CN Rail’s tracks from Vancouver to Halifax with the Union Pacific line in Chicago and GMexico Transportes (GMXT) terminals. CN Rail also reported revenues of C$4.31 billion for the quarter ended March 31, up from C$3.71 billion last year.

– Two major U.S. cable news personalities, Tucker Carlson and Don Lemon, were let go from Fox News and CNN, respectively, on Monday. Carlson, who had been with the network since 2009, was fired days after Fox News settled a defamation lawsuit from Dominion Voting Systems for US$787.5 million. He had also been accused of spreading conspiracy theories on his program Tucker Carlson Tonight. Lemon, who was with CNN since 2006, made on-air sexist comments about U.S. presidential candidate Nikki Haley in February, while a report from Variety in April detailed accusations of misogynistic conduct towards co-workers.
