  • In a tit-for-tat response to Canada’s expulsion of a Chinese diplomat on Monday, China announced it was expelling Canadian Jennifer Lynn Lalonde, consul in the Canadian consulate in Shanghai. Canada expelled Chinese diplomat Zhao Wei over accusations he had tried to target the family of Conservative MP Michael Chong due to his criticism of China’s treatment of Uyghur Muslims.

 

  • Former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan was arrested Tuesday when he appeared in court to face corruption allegations. Protests erupted in several cities, with dozens of Khan’s supporters also arrested.

 

  • Russia held its annual Victory Day celebrations on Tuesday marking the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II. President Vladimir Putin spoke out against ‘Western global elites’ in a speech, likening the current invasion of Ukraine to the country’s fight against the Nazis. Russia fired cruise missiles into Kyiv, although no casualties were reported.
