WINNIPEG, May 11 (MarketsFarm) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

  • Ukraine’s counteroffensive against Russia has yet to start, with more time needed to prepare, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told European broadcasters on Thursday. Meanwhile, Britain announced it would increase its support by sending Storm Shadow cruise missiles to help Ukraine.

  • Israeli air attacks on the Gaza Strip continued for their third day Thursday, with at least 27 Palestinians dead and dozens more injured. Several leaders of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group were reportedly among those killed. Palestinians have countered by firing rockets towards southern Israel, while Egypt is hosting mediation efforts.

  • Weekly jobless claims in the United States hit their highest level since October 2021 in the past week, with initial claims increasing by 22,000 from the previous week to 264,000. The report beat market expectations and was seen as a sign that higher interest rates were impacting the labour market.
