– Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Sunday that four federal byelections will take place on June 19 in the ridings of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce–Westmount, Que.; Oxford, Ont. Portage–Lisgar, Man.; and Winnipeg South Centre, Man. People’s Party of Canada leader Maxime Bernier has stated his interest in running for the Portage-Lisgar seat and replacing former interim Conservative Party leader Candice Bergen. Meanwhile, Green Party deputy leader Jonathan Pedneault will run in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce–Westmount in an attempt to replace longtime Liberal MP and former astronaut Marc Garneau.

– The Turkish presidential election appears to be headed to a May 28 runoff after the two major candidates, incumbent Recep Tayyip Erdogan and opposition leader Kemal Kiliçdaroğlu both haven’t received at least 50 per cent of the vote. Erdogan, Turkey’s right-wing president since 2014, had received 49 per cent of the vote compared to 45 per cent for his left-wing challenger Kiliçdaroğlu. Most overseas ballots are still left to be counted.
– Two opposition parties, Move Forward and Pheu Thai, were the top two vote-getters in Thailand’s general election on Sunday and could remove the military-supported United Thai Nation Party from power. Move Forward and Pheu Thai were elected to 113 and 112 constituency seats, respectively out of 400. There are 100 party list seats elected via proportional representation, for which Move Forward had 36 per cent of the vote and Pheu Thai had 27 per cent. The United Thai Nation Party, led by Prime Minister Prayuth Chanocha, received 23 constituency seats and 12 per cent of the party-list vote.
– Trudeau is set to leave Monday for a week-long trip to Asia, which will include his first official visit to South Korea from May 16 to 18. He will also attend a ceremony to open the Kapyong Battle Commemorative Trail. Trudeau will also attend the Group of Seven (G7) leaders’ summit in Hiroshima, Japan from May 19 to 21 where they will discuss the worldwide economy and global security.
