Global Markets: Russia reportedly thwarts Ukrainian incursion

WINNIPEG, June 1 (MarketsFarm) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

 

  • Russia reportedly repelled several cross-border attacks from Ukraine, killing at least 30 Ukrainian soldiers, according to reports out of Moscow. Meanwhile, Russian aerial assaults on Kyiv continued, with the latest casualties including a nine-year-old girl, according to Ukrainian reports.

 

  • Roughly half of the wildfire near Halifax has now been contained, although with hot and dry weather in the forecasts officials warn that the situation is still very dangerous. Evacuation orders were lifted in some areas, but thousands of people remain displaced.

 

  • The United States Republican-majority House of Representatives passed a bill to raise the country’s debt ceiling on Wednesday by 314-117 – including 165 votes in favour from Democrats. The bill now goes to the Democratic-controlled Senate, where it must be passed before June 5 to avoid default.
