WINNIPEG — The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.
– Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, along with Emergency Preparedness Minister Bill Blair and Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault, will provide an update later today on the wildfire situations across Canada. More than 150 fires were burning in Quebec, causing the evacuation of residents in the northwest part of the province. In Nova Scotia, firefighters contained a wildfire near Halifax, but another one in Shelburne County is still out of control. Alberta ended a province-wide state of emergency, but the provincial government still warns the situation is serious.

– Russian officials claimed on Monday that Ukrainian forces were attempting to advance in the partly-occupied province of Zaporizhzhia, one day after Russia said it stopped a Ukrainian attack in Donetsk. Ukrainian officials did not confirm any of the assaults, but many observers have been anticipating a counter-offensive by the Ukrainians to reclaim territory over the past few weeks.
– The United States military released a video on Monday showing a Chinese navy ship sharply cut across the path of American destroyer ship USS Chung-Hoon on the Taiwan Strait on Saturday, causing the latter to slow down. The U.S. military ship was participating in “freedom of navigation” transit with Canadian frigate HMCS Montreal at the time of the incident. China maintains that the strait and the island of Taiwan are part of its territory, while the U.S. considers the strait to be in international waters.
