Global Markets: St. Lawrence Seaway workers issue strike notice

WINNIPEG – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Unifor, the union representing workers on the St. Lawrence Seaway Corp., issued a 72-hour strike notice to employers on Wednesday. The union added that it will bargain through Thursday in order to avoid a strike by Saturday. Negotiations began last June and additional talks were held in September before both sides resumed bargaining on Oct. 17. Last week, 99 per cent of workers at St. Lawrence Seaway Corp. voted in favour of a strike if a deal is not reached.

– Congressman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) failed in his second attempt to become the new Speaker of the United States House of Representatives on Wednesday, receiving only 199 votes while needing 217 to win the top job. The ally of former U.S. President Donald Trump had 200 lawmakers vote for him in his first attempt on Tuesday. Minority House Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) had the most votes at 212. A third vote will take place later today.

– Arthur Irving and his daughter Sarah Irving are no longer chair and executive vice-president of New Brunswick-based Irving Oil, respectively, according to the company’s website. The elder Irving now has the title of chairman emeritus, while Sarah is no longer listed. Irving Oil is in the middle of a “strategic review” evaluating the company’s options, including a partial or full sale. New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs, a former employee of Irving, suggested that the changes were due to the federal government’s climate policies.
