WINNIPEG, Nov. 16 (MarketsFarm) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

 

  • United States President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping met outside of San Francisco for four hours on Wednesday, dealing with several issues that are sore spots in their relations. Xi told Biden that China will not invade Taiwan in the coming years, but military action could be warranted. As well, the presidents agreed to open a hotline in which they could speak with each other immediately and to resume military contacts. Biden and Xi also discussed trade, fentanyl, Iran, artificial intelligence and climate change.

  • Statistics Canada reported on Thursday the number of people collecting regular Employment Insurance benefits in September dipped to 437,000 on a net decline of 4,000 from August. Compared to the previous September, the drop is 10,000. Manitoba and New Brunswick saw the largest reductions while British Columbia and Newfoundland and Labrador experienced the biggest increases. StatCan also said Canada’s unemployment rate remains at 5.5 per cent.

 

  • The U.S. Senate voted Wednesday 87 to 11 in favour of a spending measure to avoid a government shutdown that could have started this weekend. The bill, previous passed by the House of Representatives, is to be signed by President Biden. It included spending through to Jan. 19 on military construction, veteran benefits, transportation, housing/urban development, agriculture, energy and water programs, as well as the Food and Drug Administration. All other federal operations, including defence spending, were scheduled to expire Feb. 2.

 

  • Israeli troops pressed their search of the Al Shifa Hospital for a second day. The Israeli Defense Forces accused Hamas of having its headquarters located in tunnels underneath Gaza’s largest medical facility. Troops detained hospital staff, interrogating them on the possible whereabouts of Hamas personnel. Hamas denied the IDF’s allegations and invited United Nations officials to inspect the hospital.
