Global Markets: Air Canada, pilots reach new agreement

– Air Canada said on Sunday it reached a tentative agreement with more than 5,400 of its pilots, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA). Air Canada said its main airline and Air Canada Rouge will operate as normal and the new four-year deal will “recognize the contributions and professionalism” of its pilots. A ratification vote is expected over the next month. Without the new agreement, a work stoppage would have started as early as Wednesday.

– Former United States President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was the target of another assassination attempt, this time at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Fla. on Sunday. U.S. Secret Service agents fired at a gunman who pointed a rifle with a scope about 400 to 500 yards away from Trump. Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, of Kaaawa, Hawaii was taken into custody after fleeing the scene in an SUV. Routh had been previously interviewed by media outlets about Americans volunteering to fight for Ukraine, but was never issued a visa to do so. In social media accounts, he tagged Trump, along with other political figures including former presidential candidate Nikki Haley and former Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard.

– Canadian Members of Parliament begin their fall sitting in the House of Commons later today, the first time they’ll be in the Lower House since June. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is facing pressure from Opposition and Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre while also reeling from the New Democrats’ withdrawal of their supply-and-confidence agreement. MPs will debate on Bill C-71 on Monday, which would amend the Citizenship Act and change rules on the citizenship of Canadians born abroad. Two by-elections in the ridings of Elmwood-Transcona in Manitoba and LaSalle-Emard-Verdun in Quebec will also be held on Monday.
