Global Markets: Retail sales improving

Increase in September, another likely in October

  • Statistics Canada reported on Friday that retail sales rose 0.4 per cent in September and projected those for October to be up 0.7 per cent. StatCan said for the third quarter of 2024 retail sales grew 0.9 per cent.

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on Thursday that the Ukrainian city of Dnipro was hit by a new conventional intermediate-range missile. Ukraine accused Russia of launching an intercontinental ballistic missile at the city, but the United States didn’t support the allegation.

 

  • As Germany heads towards a general election on Feb. 23, Chancellor Olaf Scholz confirmed he won’t step down as leader of the Social Democrats. The announcement came after Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said he wasn’t seeking to replace Scholz.

 

  • Following the withdrawal of Matt Gaetz’s withdrawal as Donald Trump’s pick for U.S. Attorney General on Thursday, the President-elect announced Pam Bondi as his new choice. A Trump loyalist, Bondi is the former AG of Florida.

 

  • Officials in Brazil accused former President Jair Bolsonaro on Thursday of plotting a coup against the current administration led by Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. An investigation alleged Bolsonaro and several of his ministers and aides planned to overthrow Lula about week after being sworn in.
