Global Markets: Real GDP growth slows in Q3

Higher household spending helps sustain increase

  • The Canadian real gross domestic product continued to grow in 2024, expanding by 0.3 per cent in the third quarter, Statistics Canada reported on Friday. In the first and second quarters real GDP growth came in at 0.5 per cent. Higher household and government spending paved the way for the increase, which was tempered by slower non-farm inventory accumulation, lower business capital investment and reduced exports.

  • The Bank of England warned on Friday that trade barriers could negatively impact global trade. Without specifically naming United States President-elect Donald Trump, the BoE said higher tariffs could lead to increased inflation and greater volatility in the financial markets. Earlier this week, Trump said he will slap tariffs on a number of countries the day he takes office.

 

  • Inflation among the 20 countries using the Euro as their currency rose to 2.3 per cent in November, Eurostat reported on Friday. Although it met analysts’ projections, inflation was up from two per cent in October and the European Central Bank’s target line. There are now expectations the ECB will be more cautious with any interest rate cut in December.

 

  • At one time Black Friday was largely a United States thing, but now it’s become a global phenomenon. Reports said retailers in Canada, Europe and elsewhere now offer sharply reduced prices the day after the U.S. celebrates Thanksgiving.
