- South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared “emergency martial law” on Tuesday, as he accused opposition parties of sympathizing with North Korea and engaging in anti-state activities. After narrowly winning the 2022 presidential election, the conservative Yoon has struggled to implement his agenda in the face of strong opposition that controls the country’s parliament. During Yoon’s televised address, he did not specific what measures would be taken.

- Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will brief the opposition party leaders on Tuesday about his surprise visit to United States President-elect Donald Trump. Trudeau, Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc and a small contingent met with Trump along with some of his cabinet nominees and advisors at Mar-a-Lago on Friday. The dinner meeting was an attempt to avoid the 25 per cent tariffs Trump stated he would impose on Canada effective Jan. 20.
- As Israeli forces bombed Gaza to the country’s south on Tuesday, to the north the ceasefire with Hezbollah in Lebanon appeared to be on the verge of collapse. Gaza health authorities said 36 people were killed and 96 more were injured. Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati said diplomatic efforts to save the 60-day ceasefire have ramped up as Israel and Hezbollah accuse each other of violating the agreement.
- A Delaware judge upheld her decision on Tuesday to deny Tesla chief executive Elon Musk the US$56 billion compensation package the electric vehicle maker was to present to him six years ago. Despite Tesla shareholders voting to give Musk the amount, the judge stated the amount was excessive. Musk and Tesla indicated on social media they plan to appeal.
