  • The United States Treasury Department said on Monday it was breached by Chinese state-sponsored hackers. While the hackers reportedly accessed unclassified documents, the Treasury called it a major incident. Reports said the hackers compromised cybersecurity service provider BeyondTrust to gain access to the Treasury. China said it opposes all forms of hacker attacks.

  • Reports on Tuesday said pre-flight checks of the Jeju Air passenger plane that crashed Sunday didn’t find any issues. The crash of the Boeing 737-800 killed 179 people onboard after the pilots attempted an emergency landing due to problems with the plane’s landing gear. As jet skidded off the runway it collided with a concrete barrier.

 

  • Canadian Minister of Finance Dominic LeBlanc announced on Monday that the federal government will extend the deadline for charitable tax donations to Feb. 28. The move came after several charities reported sharp drops in donations due the labour dispute at Canada Post. However, the Liberal minority government might not survive to pass the required legislation as its facing non-confidence motions from the opposition parties.

 

  • With the state funeral for former U.S. President Jimmy Carter set for Jan. 9, the equities market will pause that morning while the Chicago Mercantile Exchange will close early at 12:15 CST. President Joe Biden announced that Thursday will also be a national day of mourning. Carter passed away at age 100 years on Sunday.
