- United States President Joe Biden said on Friday that he’s blocking the US$14.1 billion sale of U.S. Steel to Nippon Steel. Biden based his decision on a report from a U.S. security review panel. The decision came after the two steel giants announced the deal in December 2023. President-elect Donald Trump previously said he also opposes the merger. Reports said the two companies are considering their legal options.

- Reports suggested on Friday that one action Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau could take is to prorogue the House of Commons on the approval of Governor-General Mary Simon. Such would effectively end all legislation the House is considering. With the House set to resume sitting Jan. 27, the opposition Conservatives and New Democrats stated they’re prepared to move respective motions of non-confidence to bring down Trudeau’s minority Liberal government. Shutting down the Commons would prevent such a measure from happening.
- The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation now said on Thursday that Shamsud-Din Jabbar acted alone when he drove a pick-up truck through a crowd along Bourbon Street in New Orleans on New Year’s. The deaths of 14 people and the injuring of more than 30 others has been deemed an act of terrorism. Meanwhile, authorities in Las Vegas stated Matthew Alan Livelsberger also acted alone in blowing up a Tesla pick-up truck outside the Trump International Hotel. Authorities said Jabbar and Livelsberger served on the same military base, but noted there isn’t a direct connection between them.
- There was a tense, six-hour standoff on Friday in Seoul between presidential guards along with military troops who tried to prevent authorities from arresting President Yoon Suk Yeol. Last month, the South Korean president was impeached by the country’s parliament after he declared martial law, which was quickly followed by widespread protests defending democracy. Authorities decided not to take Yoon into custody at this time.
