– Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called a news conference for 9:45 a.m. CST on Monday to discuss his political future, at which many believe he will announce his resignation. Trudeau has been under pressure from numerous Liberal MPs to resign over the past few weeks due to tumbling poll numbers and a willingness from the Conservatives and the NDP to hold a non-confidence vote in the House of Commons. Trudeau was first elected as an MP in 2008 before becoming leader of the Liberal Party in 2013. In 2015, Trudeau became the first child of a former PM to rise to Canada’s highest political office after he led the Liberals to a majority government. In the two following elections, Trudeau and the Liberals won minorities.

– Blizzard conditions blanketed the central United States with snow and ice on Sunday, with many areas expecting the heaviest snowfall in at least a decade. Twenty centimetres of snow fell over the weekend in some areas with the National Weather Service issuing winter storm warnings in Kansas and Missouri. The warning was extended into New Jersey for Monday and Tuesday. Louisville, Ky. received a record-breaking 20 cm of snow on Sunday, while parts of upstate New York saw 90 cm due to a lake effect.

– Pope Francis appointed Italian nun Sister Simona Brambilla to lead the department in charge of the Catholic Church’s religious orders on Monday, becoming the first woman to become a prefect in a major Vatican office. Brambilla is a member of the Consolata Missionaries religious order and takes over from retiring Cardinal Joao Braz de Aviz. Cardinal Angel Fernandez Artime will be named “co-prefect” with Brambilla, as typically, prefects must be able to celebrate Mass, which can only be done by men.
