– The United States Congress certified the presidential election victory of Donald Trump without incident on Monday, presided by the candidate Trump defeated, vice-president Kamala Harris. Four years earlier, Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol building in an unsuccessful effort to stop the certification of Joe Biden’s victory. Trump has said he plans to pardon individuals convicted for their roles in the riot.
– North Korea said Tuesday it tested a new hypersonic intermediate-range missile designed to strike targets in the Pacific Ocean. Last year, the country tested multiple weapon systems, including intercontinental ballistic missiles. A spokesperson for South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said they believe North Korea is exaggerating the missile’s capabilities, but the military is still analyzing the test.

– An earthquake killed at least 95 people in Tibet on Tuesday with aftershocks felt in western China and in Nepal. Chinese state media said approximately 1,000 houses were damaged. The epicentre was located 75 kilometres northeast of Mount Everest in a seismically-active area. The U.S. Geological Survey measured the earthquake at a 7.1 magnitude with a shallow depth of 10 kilometres.
– Meta announced on Tuesday it will end its fact-checking program for its platforms Facebook, Instagram and Threads. Instead, it will implement a community notes system similar to X. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg also said it will change its content moderation policies and undo policies which reduced the amount of political content in users’ feeds, citing the U.S. presidential election as a major reason and criticizing “governments and legacy media” for allegedly pushing “to censor more and more.”
