- ‘Significant’ progress towards a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was reportedly made overnight, as mediators from the United States and Arab nations worked on brokering a deal. Each side of the conflict has reportedly received a draft of the proposal, with negotiators said to be looking to have a ceasefire in place before Donald Trump is inaugurated next week. There have been several failed attempts at a ceasefire over the past 15 months of fighting.
- Efforts to contain wildfires in Los Angeles continued Monday, with more strong winds in the forecast. At least 24 people have been confirmed dead from the fires, with thousands of homes destroyed. An estimated 100,000 people have been forced to evacuate, and officials warn that more evacuations are possible.
- Croatian President Zora Milanović was re-elected to another five-year term over the weekend, winning more that 74 per cent of the vote. Milanović is known as a critic of the European Union and NATO.
