• Hamas has reportedly accepted a draft agreement for the release of hostages and a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Officials involved in the negotiations said Israel and the Palestinian group were at the closest point of reaching a deal yet over the past 15 months of fighting. Details are being finalized, with any plan also needing final approval from the Israeli Cabinet.

• While progress was being made to contain fires in Los Angeles, firefighters were bracing for an “extreme fire weather scenario” on Tuesday as high winds could whip up fresh blazes. The fires have damaged thousands of homes and killed at least 24 people.

• Former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney appeared on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart on Monday evening, discussing the resignation of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Liberal’s chances in the next federal election. Carney, who also headed the Bank of England, is expected to announce a campaign for the Liberal leadership later this week but would not confirm his candidacy on the show.
