– Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Hamas of holding up approval of a ceasefire agreement announced on Wednesday, which would release numerous hostages. Netanyahu said Hamas was reneging on certain parts of the agreement to gain more concessions, but a senior Hamas official said the group was committed to the current ceasefire agreement. Despite the announcement, Israel continued with its air strikes with the Palestinian Civil Emergency Service claiming at least 77 people were killed since the ceasefire announcement.

– United States President Joe Biden delivered a nationally-televised farewell address on Wednesday just five days before president-elect Donald Trump is sworn into office. Biden used the address to warn Americans of a new “oligarchy” of the ultra-wealthy taking shape and a “tech-industrial complex” threatening democracy and infringing on people’s rights. He also called for a constitutional amendment to end immunity for sitting presidents. Biden is leaving politics after being first elected as a senator for Delaware in 1973 before serving as vice-president for Barack Obama from 2009 to 2017. He was elected president in 2020, but failed re-election in November.
– Alberta Premier Danielle Smith was the lone holdout in a communique signed by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and 12 other premiers on Wednesday explaining their commitment to stop U.S. president-elect Donald Trump from imposing tariffs on Canadian goods after he is sworn into office on Monday. Smith, who visited Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, said she disagreed with potential plans to cut off energy supply to the U.S. and impose export tariffs on Alberta energy. Smith was in Panama at the time of the First Ministers meeting and did not take part in the final press conference.
– Former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney is expected to announce his bid for the leadership of the federal Liberal Party later today in his hometown of Edmonton after years of rumours and speculation. Earlier this week, Carney was interviewed by Jon Stewart on “The Daily Show”, which has received nearly two million views on YouTube. So far, Ottawa MP Chandra Arya, Nova Scotia MP Jamie Battiste and former Montreal MP Frank Baylis have announced their respective candidacies. Former deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland and Government House leader Karina Gould are also expected to run.
