Global Markets: Trump, Carney to meet in White House

– Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will visit the White House in a matter of days, according to United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday. Carney said he and Trump agreed on the importance of their countries working together “for their mutual betterment.” They previously agreed to continue trade negotiations prior to Carney’s election victory on Monday.

– The Canadian Transportation Agency set its volume-related composite price indices for the 2025-26 crop year on Wednesday for both national railways. The indices determine revenue caps for Western Canadian grain movement. The VRCPI for Canadian National Railway is 1.9734, an increase of 1.72 per cent from the previous crop year. For Canadian Pacific Kansas City, the VRCPI is 1.9349, up 3.11 per cent from one year ago. If railways surpass their maximum revenue entitlement, they must pay the excess plus a penalty to the Western Grains Research Foundation. Last year, CPKC exceeded its revenue cap by C$1.8 million.

– The World Bank projected food prices to decline seven per cent in 2025 and another one per cent in 2026 in its Commodity Market Outlook released on Wednesday. However, it also said reduced humanitarian aid and military conflicts will worsen the effects of hunger. The World Bank also expects commodity prices to drop 12 per cent in 2025 and another five per cent in 2026, with the price of Brent crude oil falling from US$81 per barrel in 2024 to US$64 in 2025.
