Global Markets: Trump Middle East tour continues

  • Soybean and corn futures in the United States were slightly softer Wednesday morning, as good crop conditions across the country weighed on values. Wheat was mixed, with losses in spring wheat contracts and gains in the winter wheats. Malaysian palm oil was higher.

 

  • U.S. President Donald Trump continued his Middle Eastern tour Wednesday, meeting with Syria’s interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa in Saudi Arabia. The meeting marked the first between leaders of the two countries in 25 years. Trump also spoke on Iran, calling it to “stop sponsoring terror, halt its bloody proxy wars and permanently and verifiably cease pursuit of nuclear weapons.”

  • Russia and Ukraine may restart peace talks on Thursday, although it remains unclear who will attend if the discussions take place. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has challenged Russian President Vladimir Putin to meet in person in Istanbul.

 

  • The latest Israeli airstrikes on Gaza killed 70 people, including 22 children, reported health officials. The strikes came one day after Hamas released an Israeli-American hostage, in what had been hoped would be a gesture to ease tensions.
