– Finance officials from the world’s top economies will meet in Banff for a three-day summit starting today as a precursor to the G7 meetings next month. Canadian Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne and Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem will host the meetings this week. In addition to tariffs and keeping Russian financial assets frozen to fund Ukraine, the leaders will also discuss the global economy, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. The heads of the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development will also attend.

– At a media briefing in Tehran, Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said his country is ready for talks to restore diplomatic relations with Canada. However, Canada must be the one to initiate talks. Canada severed relations with Iran in 2012 due to the latter’s development of a nuclear weapon and its support of then-Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. There is recent speculation that a new deal with the United States and Iran will be reached, which would restore ties between the two countries.
– India’s annual southwest monsoon is expected in the coming days, the earliest start for the annual rains since 2009. The monsoon advances northward and brings 75 per cent of the country’s annual rainfall. India’s meteorological department forecast above-normal rains this year, which would be needed for record crop projections.
– Kansas City-based grain company Bartlett announced plans on Tuesday to acquire Ceres Global Ag for US$140 million with intentions to take the company private. Ceres is based in Minnesota, but also operates in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Both companies said they expect the deal to be finalized in late second quarter or third quarter 2025.
