The Prince Edward Island government will shut down the NOFG organic hog processing plant at Charlottetown on March 28, CBC reported Monday.
NOFG (Natural Organic Food Group), a Quebec company, had handed the keys over to the province earlier this year, after which the province appointed a receiver to operate the plant.
The province, which had called in its $1.5 million loan to NOFG, said at the time that it would wind down the plant’s operations if a private-sector buyer could not be found.
The facility took hogs from across the Maritime provinces and Quebec and marketed their meat under the PEI Natural, PEI Organic and PEI Omega 3 brands.
Workers at the plant told CBC they knew the plant was going to close but just learned the closing date Monday.
