Global markets: UK general election in progress

WINNIPEG, June 8 – The following is a glance at the news moving markets globally.

– The UK is having its general election on Thursday. Conservative Theresa May is up against the Labour party’s Jeremy Corbyn.

– Buyers of new homes in Canada saw prices rise 0.8 per cent in April, the largest monthly increase since May 2016. Higher prices in Toronto and Vancouver led the gain, Statistics Canada said in a report on Thursday.

– US jobless claims in the week ending June 3 were down 10,000 to a seasonally adjusted 245,000, according to reports out of the country on Thursday.

US jobless claims have been below 300,000 for 118 consecutive weeks, which indicates a healthy labour force.
