Winnipeg, Sept. 15 (CNS Canada) – India is lifting an export ban on a number of pulse crops that had been in place for ten years. Tur (pigeon peas), mung beans, and urad dal (black lentils), will now be allowed for export – joining chickpeas. The move comes as farmers in the country are facing low prices due to in part to large government stocks.

Canada exported 131,100 tonnes of peas during the week ended September 10, according to the latest Canadian Grain Commission data. Lentil exports during the week of 21,400 tonnes, were the first sizeable sales of the pulse crop during the 2017/18 marketing-year-to-date.

Number 2 large green laird lentils are currently topping out at about 46 cents per pound, according to Prairie Ag Hotwire data. Red lentil bids range from about 20 to 24 cents per pound.

Top-end green pea bids range from C$8.00 to C$8.50 per bushel in Western Canada, while yellow peas range from C$7.10 to C$8.25 per bushel.

Large calibre (10mm) kabuli chickpeas are currently seeing prices as high as 69 cents per pound.
