Pulse Report: Chickpeas drop in price in Western Canada

Winnipeg, Nov. 30 (CNS) – The government of Canada released
a statement Wednesday in regards to the ongoing pulse trade
dispute with India. The government stated it was “deeply
concerned and disappointed” with India’s regulatory and tariff
decisions. As well stating it has been working to reach a long
term solution to the issue including taking a trade mission to
India, however progress has stalled and a solution to this issue
is elusive.

Victoria could be in jeopardy if the area receives the
forecasted rains, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. The
Bureau has issued a severe weather warning for heavy rainfall
for Victoria. Part of the state could be hit with 300mm of rain
in just three days.
Green pea prices have fallen 25 cents in Western Canada,
according to the latest data available from the Prairie Ag
Hotwire. Green peas are selling for C$8 per bushel. Over the
last month the price has fallen 50 cents, since India announced
a 50 per cent import tariff on peas. Yellow pea prices held
steady at C$6.75 per bushel, but have fallen C$1.25 over the
last month.
Most chickpea varieties have fallen in price in Western
Canada, according to the Prairie Ag Hotwire. Kabuli 9 mm
chickpeas dropped three cents to 66 cents per pound, Kabuli 8 mm
fell 16 cents to 46 cents per pound and Kabuli 7 mm dropped six
cents to 36 cents per pound. Kabuli 10 mm chickpeas however rose
in price, increasing five cents to 74 cents per pound.
