Pulses: Australian storm threatening pulses

Winnipeg, December 4 (CNS) – Trade estimates on the size of Canada’s pea production in 2017/18 are pegged between 3.7 to 4.2 million tonnes. Statistics Canada is due to release its estimates on Wednesday morning.
A looming storm in Australia has forced many farmers in southeast Australia to ramp up harvest efforts for their chickpeas and lentils. Rainfall in excess of 250mm is being forecast for parts of eastern Victoria.
Great Falls was the site for this year’s Montana Pulse Day on Dec. 1. According to the president of the Northern Pulse Grower’s Association, acreage is rising rapidly across the state. In an interview with KRTV he says dry beans, lentils and chickpeas play a vital role in the state’s agricultural market. Over 80 per cent of pulses grown in the United States come from either North Dakota or Montana.

Green pea prices in Western Canada softened by 25 cents over the past week, according to the latest information from the Prairie Ag Hotwire. Bids are now listed at C$7.00 to C$8.00 a bushel.
Richlea #2 lentils fell 2 cents over the past week and are listed at 24 to 29 cents a pound.
Kabuli #1 chickpeas rose five cents over the past week and are currently going for 73 to 74 cents per pound.
Bids for black beans were up one cent over the past week at 27 to 31.5 cents a pound.
Black beans in North Dakota declined by one cent and are going for 33 cents a pound.
